Happy Holidays, Youth Ultimate Enthusiasts!

I am writing from snowy Metaline Falls in the northeast corner Washington
State. Maybe someday there will be youth Ultimate here (if we can beat
youth soccer and lacrosse to the punch!). In the meantime, I have 5 pieces
of news for you:

1. USA Ultimate Coaching Workshops Visit Seattle
2. Mini MoHo Revival!
3. Gifts that Give
4. Spring Leagues and Spring Reign
5. Pre-Season Middle School Scrimmage Opportunity

1. USA ULTIMATE COACHING WORKSHOPS VISIT SEATTLE

This January, DiscNW is bringing two USA Ultimate workshops to Seattle.
This is a unique opportunity for comprehensive coach training prior to the
busy spring youth season. DiscNW rarely hosts both of these clinics in the
same year, let alone the same month. Both clinics will be taught by Matt
Tsang, who has coached the women's club team San Francisco Fury to 7
consecutive USA Ultimate club championships.*

****Ethics and Performance (Level I) - January 12***
This full day workshop focuses on ethics in the morning, followed by an
afternoon dedicated to modeling quality instructional methods in teaching
basic skills and running a practice.

***Advanced Strategies and Tactics (Level II) - January 26-27***
The Level II Coach Certification is 2 full days of instruction that focuses
on advanced coaching for Ultimate and is ideal for high school, college,
and club captains and coaches who are looking for new tools to help take
their leadership to the next level.

Learn more about the clinics here:
http://www.usaultimate.org/resources/coaching/cdp/default.aspx

Register for the clinics before the first week of January at
http://members.usaultimate.org/coaches/clinics

Bonus: there's a rebate for female coaches and coaches of females! Info at
http://www.usaultimate.org/resources/development/women/coaching_workshop_rebate.aspx

2. MINI MOHO REVIVAL!

Mini MoHo returns in 2013! Save the dates: Saturday mornings (9-11am) from
January 19 through February 9. Official registration will open later this
month at www.discnw.org.

In the meantime, here is a message from the coordinator:

"I am Margo Heffron and I am a Ultimate Player in my Senior year at Nathan
Hale HS. For my Senior Project, I am trying to organize some Free Middle
School Clinics. They will be like how mini Moho has run in the past, to
give Middle Schoolers an opportunity to shake off the cobwebs and get ready
for Spring Season, to meet other players from other schools, and to learn
and improve skills and spirit. I am going to ask my teammates from Fryz
ultimate to help me coach these events.

"I wanted to get the word out early to all of the Middle School coaches so
I could get your players interested in these clinics. I want to have an
estimate for how many players could turn out because that will help me plan
how many coaches I need and what activities I could do.

"I would like to possibly present to your teams at their respective schools
to get kids interested in my event.
Also I am looking for advice on coaching and recommendations on what drills
to do and what skills to focus on. Any input would be great. Contact me if
you have any questions or comments.

Thank you,

Margo Heffron

4. SPRING LEAGUES AND SPRING REIGN

Registration will open later this month for DiscNW spring events, and our
January mailing will contain a timeline for all 2013 youth events. In the
meantime, here is a brief summary of events coming up this spring:

***Coed Leagues for Elementary, Middle, and High School Teams***
These are school-based leagues, meaning that all players must attend the
same school (limited exceptions made only with approval of the DiscNW
Eligibility Committee). The on-field gender ratio is 4 boys to 3 girls.
Games are on Saturdays on fields throughout the greater Seattle area. The
leagues will begin March 16 and run through May 18.

***Spring Reign***
This coed tournament, with divisions for elementary, middle, and high
school teams, will be held on April 27-28 in Burlington, WA. It is a
school-based tournament, meaning that all players must attend the same
school (limited exceptions made only with approval of the DiscNW
Eligibility Committee). The on-field gender ratio is 4 boys to 3 girls.

***High School Boys' Pod/Hat League***
This club league accepts individual, pod, and team registrations. Games
will likely be on Friday nights at Magnuson Park.

***Single-Gender Middle School Play***
Schools that compete in the Cross Town Middle School League for other youth
sports can contact the Northwest School Assistant Athletic Director Mike
Mullen at <mike.mullen at northwestschool.org> to participate in the CTMS
single-gender Ultimate league this spring. Other middle schools wishing to
play single-gender Ultimate should contact DiscNW Director of Youth Wynne
Scherf at youth.director at discnw.org. DiscNW has plans to provide some
single-gender middle school play along with coed games on Saturdays.

***Girls' High School League***
The girls' high school Ultimate season takes place in the spring and is
coordinated by the schools participating therein. The head coordinators
are Britt Atack and Mike Mullen at the Northwest School. Contact them for
more information at <britt.atack at northwestschool.org> and <m
ike.mullen at northwestschool.org>. Girls' club Ultimate takes place in the
fall through DiscNW.

***Other Youth Tournaments***
DiscNW has no plans for youth tournaments this spring, beyond Spring
Reign. However, we are happy to provide tournament coordination support if
there is demand and if it fits within the DiscNW mission and annual
budget. If you would like to see a one-day event targeted at a specific
population (e.g., a pre-season tourney, an elementary school jamboree, a
single-gender tourney, or a tourney for teams in Tacoma), contact DiscNW
Director of Youth Wynne Scherf at youth.director at discnw.org. You will be
asked for support with recruiting additional teams and selecting a mutually
agreeable date, and DiscNW can manage most of the other logistics. Let us
know soon, because it takes several weeks to coordinate a new event.

5. PRE-SEASON MIDDLE SCHOOL SCRIMMAGE OPPORTUNITY

A note from Coach Hoppin at Charles Wright Academy in Tacoma: "Charles
Wright Academy has a 6th grade team that would love a few games after
school with any MS age group or skill level, November through April. We are
happy to host and are willing to drive up to Seattle for games right after
school. We can arrive at away games as early as 2:45 pm and can host as
early as 2pm any weekday. Contact: Christopher Hoppin, Charles Wright
Academy, 7723 Chambers Creek Rd W, Tacoma, WA 98467,(253) 620-8403,
choppin at charleswright.org"

That's it for today. Keep your fingers warm! Nothing smarts like a hard
disc to frozen digits!

Warm Regards,

Wynne
